I’m Matt Brady — a high school science teacher, science communicator, and writer trying to make sense of teaching, storytelling, and staying human in a world that keeps tilting sideways.
I’ve been in the classroom long enough to see the cycles: the good years, the bad years, the budget crises, the cultural panics, the policy whiplash. Through all of it, I’ve stayed because teaching lets me hold onto something rare — the belief that curiosity, kindness, and clarity still matter.
This Substack is where I think out loud about that work.
It’s a space for essays on:
the ethics of teaching
the philosophy of staying steady in turbulent times
the intersection of science and storytelling
how the changing technology landscape affects whst we do
what it means to be the adult in the room when the world refuses to act like one
I don’t promise easy answers. I’m not here to tell teachers to “just breathe” or sell you productivity gimmicks. I write about the real work: the emotional labor, the intellectual craftsmanship, the moral decisions we make every day in front of students.
You’ll find reflections on the classroom, yes — but also on narrative, culture, politics, and the slow erosion (or restoration) of humanity in public life. I believe teaching is philosophical work disguised as content delivery. I believe storytelling is a form of oxygen. And I believe the small, daily acts of decency inside schools matter more than most people realize.
If any of that resonates, you’re in the right place.
